1 Role of presynaptic specializations in activity-induced synapse formationA: mediated through glutamate receptors (blue), repetitive neuronal activation may induce the extension of filopodia and short branches from axons. Role of presynaptic specializations in activity-induced synapse formationA: mediated through glutamate receptors (blue), repetitive neuronal activation may induce the extension of filopodia and short branches from axons. Axonal filopodia establish terminaux boutons on contact with a postsynaptic target. B: release of neurotransmitter from release sites, either “orphan” or synaptic, may lead to localized extension of dendritic filopodia from an adjacent dendrite. Dendritic filopodia are converted into spines on formation of a contact with the presynaptic varicosity.
