POSSESSIVES 2nd Year Grammar
2
POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
They are used to show possession or ownership of something. They are: MY YOUR HIS HER ITS OUR YOUR THEIR
3
The possessive adjective needs to agree with the possessor and not with the thing that is possessed
For example: MY car is very old. OUR dog is black. HER boyfriend is friendly.
4
Like all adjectives, they are always located directly in front of the noun they refer to.
We do NOT include an S to the adjective when the noun is plural (like we do in Spanish) Example: OUR cars are expensive (correct) OURS cars are expensive (incorrect)
5
POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS I t is a part of speech that attributes ownership to someone or something. Like any other pronoun, it substitutes a noun phrase and can prevent its repetition. For example: These glasses are MINE not YOURS. MINE and YOURS are possessive pronouns and they stand for: My glasses and your glasses respectively
