2 Vocab! Contraction- combine two words to create one shortened more concise word. Hypothetical- Based on a hypothesis.

3 Lay vs lie Lay is the past tense of lie
Lay – place something on something; subject is acting on another subject Ex. I went to lay down the books. Lie – subject is acting on itself Ex. I went to go lie down.

4 May vs might Might is the past tense of may
May – expresses what is factual or what could be true Ex. We may go to the store. Might – expresses what is hypothetical Ex. We might go to the store

5 Which vs that That – limits the identity of the subject
Ex. The dog that is inside barks a lot. Which – tells something interesting/incidental Ex. The dog, which is inside, barks a lot.

6 Who vs whom vs who’s vs whose
Who – acting as a subject doing an action Ex. John was the one who kicked that stone Whom – acting as a subject that is being acted upon by a verb Ex. The man, whom was cooking dinner, was very tall. Whose – possession Ex. Whose coat is that? Who’s – contraction Ex. Who’s the owner of that coat.
