1
INORGANIC NOMENCLATURE
Ionic Names Covalent Names Common Names
2
First you have to decide whether you have an ionic compound or other type of compound
3
Naming ionic compounds if you have the formula
4
Ionic Compounds Naming
The cation is first and is read just like the element unless polyatomic The anion is second and has an “-ide” ending unless polyatomic Examples: NaCl and MgO Polyatomic ions have common names Examples: CO32-, SO43-, NH41+, PO43-
5
Polyatomic Ions need to be looked up
6
Transition Elements have Roman Numerals which indicates their charge
Try some examples
7
Copper Nitrate is? CuNO3 or Cu(NO3)2
Transition metals may have more than one oxidation state which means that they can have more than one ratio with an anion. Therefore the oxidation state is included in the name. Copper Nitrate is? CuNO3 or Cu(NO3)2 Copper (I) Nitrate or Copper (II) Nitrate Oxidation numbers can be found by the polyatomic ion or just the anion in general because the oxidation number does not change
8
How do we find out the formula from the name
How do we find out the formula from the name? (what the ratio of cations to anions is in the ionic compound)? Really the question here is.
9
Li O Ionic Formulas 1st Cations, 2nd Anions
Use oxidation number crisscross to balance Ex. Lithium Oxide Li1+ O2- Li O 1 2
10
Reduce at the end Example: MgO
11
Ionic Comps & Hydration
prefixes for the degree of hydration CuNO H2O Copper (I) Nitrate Pentahydrate
12
Nomenclature for Molecular Compounds
13
Many common names exist
Chemicals were used before we knew there make-up and everyone uses chemicals not just chemists
14
The name of the less electronegative is not changed
The element with the smallest electronegativity is written first Hydrogen will appear out of order frequently because it is part of groups The name of the less electronegative is not changed Add “ide” to more electronegative element NO2
15
Elements include prefixes
Mono – 1 (sometimes assumed) Di – 2 Tri – 3 Tetra – 4 Pent – 5 Hex – 6 Hept - 7 Oct - 8 The prefix differentiates from ionic and specifies (carbon monoxide & carbon dioxide)
16
How do we find the formula from the name?
