1
Aim: What happens during a change of state?
Do Now: Describe what occurs during the water cycle.
2
Water’s Changes of States
Precipitation: is any form of water that falls from a cloud. water vapor is the most important gas in the atmosphere.
3
Temperature: - is a measure of the average kinetic energy in a substance. (particle movement)
4
ESRT Page 13
5
Heat – the energy transferred from one object to another because of a difference in the objects’ temp.
6
Cover ESRT Specific heat: The amount of heat need to raise the temperature of a certain substance by One Degree Celsius.
7
Latent (or “hidden”) Heat:
The heat that is needed to melt or vaporize a substance with no change in temperature.
8
* NO CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE
DURING A PHASE CHANGE!!
9
Changes of State Makes no sense without caption in book
10
Phase Changes: Melting Solid Liquid = (absorbs heat) Freezing
Liquid Solid = (releases heat) Evaporation Liquid Gas
11
Condensation Gas Liquid = (releases heat) Sublimation Solid Gas = (absorbs heat) Deposition Gas Solid

Closure: Please work to complete the handout on phase changes and states of matter. States of Matter
