Warm Up In your notes show your work
Write the slope intercept form of the equation Slope -2 y-int passes through (-2,4) slope 3 Solve each equation 3. 4a – 5 = /9V – 6 = 14 Evaluate 5. (25 – 4) ÷ ( 22 – 13) a b. 7 c. 20/7 d. 5
2
Parallel and Perpendicular
Obj: I can write the equations of lines parallel and perpendicular to given lines
3
vocabulary Parallel Lines: have the same slope and do Not intersect Perpendicular lines: intersect at right angles and their slopes are Opposite inverses (reciprocals)
4
Writing Parallel Equations
Write the equation of The line that passes through the point and is Parallel to the line: Ex: (3,2) y = 3X + 5 use Slope Intercept Form Y = MX + B Parallel means = slope 2 = 3(3) + B 2 = 9 + B y = 3X -7
5
Writing perpendicular equations
Write the equation of the line perpendicular to the equation and passing through the given slope. Ex: (-3,-2) x + 4y = 12 y = -1/4x + 3 rewrite the equation in slope-int form -2 = 4 (-3) + b use slope int form to plug in given values Note that the new slope is 4 (opp. Reciprical) -2 = b 10 = b solve for b y = 4x + 10 plug in new slope and y-int
6
Problems Write the Parallel and perpendicular Equations
(6, 4) y = 1/3X + 1 (4,2) Y = -2X + 3 (4, -6) X + 2y = 5
7
The line with equation y = 3x - 4 contains side ac of a right triangle abc. If the vertex of the right angle A is (3,5), what is an equation of the line that contains side Ab? B ? A 3x - 4 C
