Welcome in the students. State the lesson name.

3 Today’s Lesson Skill Development: Kente Inspired Ribbon weave
Weaving is one of the most ancient forms of human creativity. Baskets and textiles would not have been possible without weaving. We will introduce Kente Cloth and weave a mat inspired by their patterns. Introduction to weaving. Today you will learn: World culture To weave a mat To create a design and execute into an art piece. Explain the lesson objective and description.

4 What is weaving? Kente Inspired Ribbon weave
In weaving, the yarn is wrapped on a frame called a loom and pulled taut vertically. This is known as the warp. Another strand is worked back and forth wrapping over and under the warp. This wrapped yarn is called the weft. Most art and commercial textiles are made by this process.

5 Kente Cloth is the best known of all the African textiles.
Kente Inspired Ribbon weave The design of Kente cloth features many geometric patterns, and each pattern has a specific meaning, relating to the history or beliefs of the Ashanti people. Before becoming a master weaver, a person must learn the meanings of all of the patterns and how to create them. If you want to know more, please check out Kente Cloth is the best known of all the African textiles. They are famous for their bold multicolored patterns, bright colors and geometric shapes.

6 African Art – Kente Cloth in the Asante tradition
Kente inspired Ribbon weave African Art – Kente Cloth in the Asante tradition Today Kente cloth is worn by more than just kings. Asante people wear untailored wrappers or clothing made from Kente cloth as their best dress and on special occasions such as weddings and funerals. Rulers in the Asante Kingdom of Ghana have been wearing wrappers made of cloth called kente for several centuries. Docents please ask students: What colors do you see? Describe the pattern of the cloth. Can you see the sections that have been sewn together? Wrapper (Kente) 1901/50

7 Process: Kente Ribbon weave
Fold the construction paper in half horizontally. From the fold, cut an even number of slits (wavy or straight) up to the pre-marked lines do NOT cut to the edge. Unfold the paper, lay it flat. Begin weaving the strips “weft” (over-under-over). Glue the ends of strips to hold in place. Mix paper pattern strips until entire paper is woven Docents – irregular cuts look really nice with a contrasting woven strip or ‘weft thread’ so don’t worry about students cutting perfect straight lines. The key however is not to cut to the end of the paper! NOTE: last year docents said that when students didn’t cut straight, there would be small shreds of paper that would catch when weaving. Encourage students to cut in one or two movements. The paper will have been pre marked to help students Continue this process alternating over and under with each weft thread. If the previous weft thread went under the warp thread, the following row will begin by going over the warp. Try to use lots of patterns and textures. Leave paper to dry on the racks – label with teacher name. These should be laminated one dried.
