Jointer

General Safety Wear your safety glasses at all times
Take off all jewelry Do not wear loose clothing Make sure you are the only person in the safety zone when operating the jointer.

General Safety continued
Never set material on the tables of the jointer Never stand directly behind the machine Always joint material with the grain Never joint the end grain of material The operator should always do the jointing operation himself/herself The operator should never pass his/her hands over the cutter head.

Fence

Fence Tilt Control

Fence Width Control The jointer size is determined by the maximum width that can be face planed

Out-feed Table

In-feed Table Adjustment Wheel

Depth Scale

Push Platen

Face Plane Face Plane is defined as cutting a thin layer off one face of the material

Edge Plane Edge Plane is defined as cutting a thin layer off one edge of the material

Operation Procedure 1 1. When creating a face plane make sure the cupped side is down to ensure the material has two contact points on the table

Operation Procedure 2 2. Adjust the in-feed table to the preferred depth of cut. AND The MAXIMUM safe cut on the jointer when jointing the face of the material is 1/16 of an inch.

Operation Procedure 3 3. Stock less than 11” must not be run through the jointer AND Set the push platen on top of the material making sure the heel of the platen catches the end of the material. Turn the machine on.

Operation Procedure 4 4. Manually move the guard, and let it rest on the edge of your material before you feed it into the cutterhead.

Operation Procedure 5 5. Keep both hands on the push platen as you slowly slide the material through the cutterhead. Slide the material across the table until the guard retracts against the fence.

Face Plane Operation

Guard Retraction

Operation Procedure 1 1. Use a try-square to square up the fence before creating an edge plane

Operation Procedure 2 2. When jointing the edge of a piece of stock, the operator must have one face flat to slide evenly on the fence.

Operation Procedure 3 3. Adjust the in-feed table to the preferred depth of cut. AND The MAXIMUM safe cut on the jointer when jointing the edge of the material is 1/8 of an inch.

Operation Procedure 4 4. Turn the machine on
Keep the material tight against the fence, feeding the material through with both hands on the material. When your hands become close to the cutterhead, jump your hands over one by one.
