Arguments in Favour of a National Minimum Wage Arguments Against a National Minimum Wage Positive impact on demand and industry. Increased job growth/creation. Increases the standard of living for the poorest and most vulnerable in society. Increases incentives to take available jobs Stimulates consumption, by putting more money in the hands of low-income people Minimum wage alone isn't effective at alleviating poverty, and in fact produces a net increase in poverty due to increased unemployment. A minimum wage is but one of a range of mechanisms to address inequality. Hurts small business more than large business. Reduces the quantity demanded of workers, either through a reduction in the number of hours worked by individuals, or through a reduction in the number of jobs. May cause price inflation as businesses try to compensate by raising the prices of the goods being sold. Benefits some workers at the expense of the poorest Can result in the exclusion of certain groups from the labour force – vulnerable workers What about existing minimum wages determined by collective bargaining and sectoral determinations.
