1. What are two characteristics of life?
All life is made of cells and must experience growth.
3
2. What is mitosis? Mitosis is the process by which eukaryotic cells divide.
4
3. List four types of cells that undergo mitosis.
Skin cells, bone cells, stomach cells, amoeba, paramecia…. (there are thousands)
5
4. What types of cells do not undergo mitosis?
Prokaryotic cells (and sex cells)
6
5. What is the most important thing to know about Mitosis?
Mitosis causes offspring to have the same number of chromosomes as parents.
7
6. What would happen to your body’s cells if mitosis did not occur.
Your body’s cells would become worn out and die. They would not be replaced.
8
7. What is a zygote? A zygote is an egg that has been fertilized by a sperm.
9
8. Why is mitosis important for zygotes?
It causes them to grow into babies.
10
9. How is meiosis different than mitosis?
Meiosis: offspring have half the chromosomes as parents Mitosis: offspring have same number of chromosomes as parents
11
10. What is a gamete? A gamete is a sex cell (sperm or egg).
Gametes have half the chromosomes as other cells
12
11. Why is it important that meiosis results in new cells with half the chromosomes?
This allows the zygote to be fertilized with the correct number of chromosomes. Otherwise, the zygote would have too many chromosomes.

Who Has the Best Answer? Santa Claus: “I believe larger people, like myself, have larger tissues and organs, and that’s what makes them bigger.” Mrs. Claus: “I think people get bigger because their cells grow and get larger.” Rudolph: “If you ask me, the reason people get bigger is because they have more cells than when they were little.”
