Echinoderms Chapter 2 Section 5
2
Characteristics of Echinoderms
Examples: sea cucumbers, sea stars, sea urchins, sand dollars Invertebrates with an internal skeleton and a system of fluid-filled tubes called a water vascular system.
3
Endoskeleton made of harden plates which gives it a bumpy texture
Body Structure Endoskeleton made of harden plates which gives it a bumpy texture Radial Symmetry
4
Movement Water vascular system contracts and forces water into structures called tube feet (like squeezing water in a balloon) The ends of the tube feet are sticky (suction cups). Use these to move slowly and capture food
5
Reproduction and Life Cycle
They are either male or female Female releases eggs and male releases sperm and the eggs are fertilized in the water The larvae looks much different than the adult
6
Sea Stars Predators that eat mollusks, crabs
Uses it’s 5 arms to pry open a bivalve, it then forces its stomach out through its mouth into the shell and sucks out the body
7
Brittle Stars Arms are long and slender with flexible joints
Tube feet have no suction cups (used for getting food not for moving) Wave their arms around and slither along the ocean floor
8
Sea Urchins No arms Moveable spines that cover and protect their bodies Moves by using bands of tube feet that extend out between their spines Scrape and cut their food (seaweed) with 5 teeth-like structures
9
Sea Cucumbers Can be red, brown, blue, or green
Have rows of tube feet on the underside so they can crawl Mouth surrounded by tentacles Filter feeder Body is soft, flexible, and muscular
