Figure 1 Cytochrome P450 Enzymes Involved in the Metabolism of Sterols in Mammalian Cells The cytochrome P450 enzymes that catalyze the various steps in metabolism of sterols are indicated in red. At least 20 enzymes are required to synthesize cholesterol from acetyl-CoA; in mammalian cells, CYP51A1 is the only P450 enzyme that participates in cholesterol synthesis. Primary bile acids refer to cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and at least ten other derivatives. Steroid hormones produced from pregnenolone include dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone, cortisol, and aldosterone.
