Terms Overture - An introductory movement for orchestra intended to introduce an opera, oratorio, or other dramatic vocal composition by presenting themes to be heard later in the composition Solo – a piece of music sung by one person Duet – a piece of music sung by two people Trio - a piece of music sung by three people Quartet - a piece of music sung by four people

Terms Chorus – a piece for a large group of singers who usually sing in parts Aria – song, tune; in opera, a solo having two contrasting parts (I and II), ending with a literal or elaborated repeat of part I, usually expressing intense emotion Recitative - a narrative song that describes some action, thought, or emotion; follows the natural flow of the language, and is more of a speaking composition than a singing composition
