Regular/Irregular Verbs
Grammar Unit 5: Lesson 2 Regular/Irregular Verbs

Regular Verbs A regular verb forms its past and past participle by adding –ed or –d to the base form. Some regular verbs undergo spelling changes when –ed is added Ex. spy + -ed = spied trot + -ed = trotted refer + -ed = referred

Irregular Verbs An irregular verb forms its past and past participle in some way other than by adding -ed or –d to the base form. Ex. be  was, were  been bear  bore  borne leave  left  left choose  chose  chosen And many more… (An irregular verbs reference sheet will be uploaded to the website with this lesson.)

Exercise Write each sentence using the correct form of the verb in parentheses. Rea has (be) my best friend for years. My first attempt at a toy boat (sink) like a stone when I (try) it out. Mr. Will has (speak) at every graduation for years. Last August, we (go) kayaking on the river. He must have (break) his ankle! You probably will have (catch) a bad cold before opening night. The other day, Jim (make) a really nice fishing pole for his sister. Lewis (win) the last two contests, but I don’t think he’ll pull it off this time.
