Mission statement Design a hut that will fulfill the needs of the Ethiopian people in the area by charging their phones and providing a place to relax by using GREEN power.

Wacca, Ethiopia Population: 3,439 people.
Only two roads connecting the town to the outside world. However, does have an airport. Climate- Hot during day, mostly warm at night, sometimes chilly

Design concept

Solar panels Solar panels utilize the energy from the sun and convert it into electrical energy. Solar panels are expensive and would require maintenance in order to keep it operating efficiently enough to power the hut.

Solar updraft tower The Solar Updraft Tower uses the power of the sun and combines the chimney effect, the greenhouse effect, and the wind turbine in order to produce electrical energy. The tower requires a large area of land in order to operate efficiently so it works best in hot areas with inexpensive land.

Wind Energy A windmill utilizes natural occurring wind to provide renewable energy. However, it would be difficult to collect wind energy year round in Ethiopia for it experiences low wind during the rainy season.

Diesel power A diesel fueled generator provides sufficient energy and is commonly used throughout Africa. However, diesel fuel is nonrenewable and therefore could not provide sustainable energy to power the hut.

Cost analysis Costs Cell Tower- 195,000$ GE battery-1,800$
Inverter-680$ DC generator-2,000 $ Lighting-240$ $/month Heating-240$ $/month Air conditioning-240$ $/month Solar updraft tower-10,000$ Maintenance: 50$/month = 600$/year 20,000$/every ten years for large maintenance Revenues: 90,000$/year from leasing of cell tower 1,000$/year from harvesting crops 9,000$/year = total revenue of 100,000$/year Profit over 10 years is 761,800$ 76,180$/year Engineering analysis: -Estimated 500 people using this hut/ with cell phones -10 cents per charge= 750$per month profit for GE (at 15%) -Hut with charging cell phones

conclusion Ethiopia is a struggling nation with an unreliable power grid. With our solution, we can help the people receive power and use it effectively. Inside of the hut we will be building, people can come and charge their cell phones and just relax. The hut will be heated and air conditioned, with many lights to brighten up the place. We believe that this service will greatly help the people of Ethiopia. Our tower will be able to produce power using the thermal energy produced from the greenhouse. Also the greenhouse will be able to grow many different kinds of crops, which we can sell for a profit.
