2 Timothy: An overview Will you read* the whole book twice each week?
Four Chapters Fifteen minutes to read aloud Two Thousand words Will you read* the whole book twice each week? Even better Will you write down at least one observation to share? *Not during my sermon, Keith!

Background Resembles the “Last Will and Testament” of a dying patriarch of the faith Probably written by Paul (jailed at Rome) to Timothy in Ephesus, around 64-67AD. State of the world: bad and getting worse. State of the church: new heresies, persecution, division. What do you know about the background of 2 Timothy? What would your spiritual “Last Will and Testament” look like?
18
Background: Timothy Who has been a Paul to you?
Spiritual Single-Parent Household: A Jewish Mother and a Gentile Father (Acts 16:1-2) Likely the deliverer of 1 Corinthians Co-sender of 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians Paul’s companion at the Jerusalem conference (Galatians 2:1-3) Paul’s “genuine child in the faith.” (1 Tim 1:2, 2 Tim 1:2) Who has been a Paul to you? Who are you being a Paul to?

Greeting (2 Timothy 1:1-2) Greeting 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Paul is an apostle of Jesus BY the WILL OF GOD ACCORDING TO the Promise of life that is in Christ Jesus (resurrection life, abudnant life on earth)

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You (2 Timothy 1:3-18)
3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Timothy’s service was something for which Paul could give thanks. It was easy to pray for him. (When James thinks of me, does he immediately have something to thank God for?) In prison, Paul tended to sing and pray literally night and day. Sometimes there’s no greater freedom than in captivity. Paul remembered Timothy’s tears. Tears over what? Not sure…but…Paul missed Timothy’s COMPANIONSHIP and SERVICE. I enjoy visiting with Keith. Companionship and service. Working with James, etc. THROUGH THE TEARS, Paul REMEMBERS something MORE IMPORTANT than TEARS: SINCERE FAITH UNFEIGNED FAITH. Real religion. True trust. What is this? It’s living and active not dead…it cares for orphans, not led away. DESCRIBE FAKE FAITH. DWELLS in Lois and Eunice. Faith is living. Mustard seed? Because it lives it multiplies. Am I a good habitat for faith to grow up? SINCERE FAITH? So…. DON”T FORGET TO FAN THE FLAME BECAUSE: GOD GAVE US A SPIRIT OF POWER, LOVE, and SELF-CONTROL (This gift may have been super-natural, a first century “laying on of hands” type gift. It’s interesting that even that sort of gift required development. If that’s true, what does that say about the giftedness we each have? It requires work and development Also interesting: When you read: God didn’t give us a spirit of FEAR, but of…. What would you expect to fill in te blank? Power. LOVE? SELF-CONTROL? Those are what are necessary to fan the flame.

8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. 13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. THEREFORE is connective: Since we have this gift that needs to be fanned and God has given us the means… DON’T BE ASHAMED, but SHARE IN SUFFERING. The opposite of being ashamed is being willing to share in suffering…FOR GOSPEL, with PAUL What kind of suffering? FOR THE GOSPEL HOW to share? By the Power of God Why? -God has saved us -God has called us (because of him, not us remember Jesus?, I’m a preacher, and that’s why!) -I KNOW GOD. (v12) -I’M CONVINCED HE CAN TAKE CARE OF WHAT HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO ME What is entrusted to us? In this passage, the sound words of the faith (that’s the gospel!) It’s like a banking trust for a minor… The spirit dwells in us – as the giant security guard. Try to believe in the word-only theory of the indwelling of the spirit and leave this passage in your Bible.

15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus. Paul here is making an example of those who were ashamed and those who were not. Perhaps few things are moe miportant to Paul than not being ashamed of the Gospel: Romans 1:16-17 Matthew 10:26-33 (Limited commission, not peace but a sword, but don’t worry, because whoever)

Treasuring the Gift of God
Guard it like the greatest deposit. No one who understands what it really is would ever be ashamed of it. Meditate on the value of it. Invest in God’s gift in you and others. Guard it. (We don’t have to run scared. We have the power of God’s spirit and the presence of his people, but yeah, this needs to be treated carefully!) Think about what it is that God has done. (Remember 1 Timothy? Christ came to save sinners of whom I am chief!) Even our weaknesses are opportunities to boast in the power of Christ. Meditate on the value of God’s gift. This passage emphasized again that it is because God is gracious and good that we have salvation…that’s the natural antitode to legalism, bitterness, worry, etc. Invest in the gift. What will you do? Our attorneys have three types of time: Nonbillable. Administrative Investment Invest in the gift of God in you. Invest in others. Go visit. Remember a parable about some talents? The master was mad at the one who just guarded it. He wants us to fan into flame the gift of God. The hot ember that burns can kindle a forrest!
