STRATEGIC PLAN: SAPS (2004-2007)
To address serious and violent crime by providing the provisioning of a proactive and responsive policing service relating to the proliferation of firearms

SAPS FIREARM STRATEGY Legislation, regulations, standing orders national instructions Control processes currently located within the Central Firearm Register and to Registrar of Firearms Operational crime combating approach Crime prevention initiatives i.t.o public awareness and education campaigns Coordinated planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of firearm initiatives in the Region Develop and maintain appropriate firearm related regulators Ensure effective control processes and procedures regarding firearms Reduce and eradicate the illegal pool and criminal use of firearms Ensure prevention of crime and violence through public and civil awareness and social design Regional and Sector Cooperation

A pyramidal operational implementation approach has been adopted to address proliferation of firearms and ammunition through: Legal Compliance Tracing and confiscation of illegal firearms

Firearms Call Centre (012) Operate with Implementation and Monitoring Centre Service to the public as well as support to functional SAPS members Guidance on all aspects related to Firearms Control legislation and applicable procedures to be followed General information regarding nearest location for applicant to apply to Reporting line Any contravention of legislation by members of the public Particular focus on complaints which could result in an investigation of the fitness of a firearm owner.
