Switch In a circuit, it is important to be able to turn it off and on.
A switch is a device that can open or close a circuit. A switch can be used to turn on or off the circuit, in this example the light.

Switches If a switch is ON, the circuit is closed
IF the switch is OFF, the circuit is open

Short Circuits An electrical short circuit occurs when an electrical connection is made where one should not be Caused when: Wires touch when they shouldn’t Water touches the circuit The circuit overheats

Short Circuits Why this this bad??
Can result in damage to the components (light bulb, battery, etc) Electrical shock or fire may occur

Short Circuits How can this be prevented? FUSES!
Fuses prevent unwanted short circuits Fuses have metal links inside them that open when overheated This stops the current from flowing
