3 ESA: Pioneers in Earth Observation
ESA has been dedicated to observing Earth from space ever since the launch of its first meteorological satellite, Meteosat-1 in 1977 ESRIN is ESA’s Earth Observation centre: the world’s largest database of environmental data for Europe and Africa is managed from ESRIN ESA has been dedicated to observing Earth from space ever since the launch of its first meteorological satellite, Meteosat-1 in The subsequent series of Meteosat satellites, ERS-1 (1991–2000), ERS-2 (1995–2011) and Envisat ( ) provided a wealth of valuable data about Earth, its climate and changing environment. Sentinels provide today Europe with autonomous and independent access to EO data and information for numerous applications for protecting and securing the environment. ESRIN, in Frascati, Italy, is ESA’s centre for Earth Observation (EO) where operations and exploitation of EO satellites are managed. The world’s largest database of environmental data for both Europe and Africa is managed from ESRIN.

4 Needs Science data and Earth Observation data in particular represent today a unique and valuable asset for humankind that should be preserved without time constraints and kept accessible and exploitable by current and future generations In Earth Science, knowledge of the past and tracking of the evolution are at the basis of our capability to effectively respond to the global changes that are putting increasing pressure on the environment, and on human society. This can only be achieved if long time series of data are properly preserved and made accessible to support international initiatives These data must be preserved, kept discoverable and accessible to all users with latest tools and technologies, and continuously improved to ensure fitness for purpose and continuity with present and future missions.

5 Challenges Science data volumes are growing exponentially Long-term preservation of digital assets requires continuous and expensive actions to prevent corruption of bit-streams and obsolescence of file formats and media that can make data unusable The accessibility of the data, together with all the associated information must be ensured with up to date technology, in order to maximise their exploitability Indicative # of tapes needed for same data volume 1 2000 60000 ESA Heritage Missions Data (5 years after EOL) holdings preservation, discovery, user access, and continuous improvement to ensure fitness for purpose and continuity with present and future missions. CCT tapes in the 70s were used both to archive and distribute data to users (data were also distributed as images in paper). Same for Exabytes in the 90s with more capacity and less weight. Today we use STK (Storagetek) T10000D for archiving data at ESRIN. Data dissemination to users is mostly via online download. As an example wrt current size of Sentinel-1 Level-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) products (each about 8GB) we can say that: 1 STK T1000D tape can contain 1250 Sentinel-1 Level-1 SLC products 2 Exabytes are needed to contain only one Sentinel-1 Level-1 Single Look Complex SLC product 73 CCT are needed to contain only one Sentinel-1 Level-1 Single Look Complex SLC product

The workshop addresses: European Data Holding Organisations: data archiving and digital preservation management approaches Long Term Archive and Media state-of-the-art and future trends from archive technology and service providers perspective
