1 6 Chapter Chapter 2 Percent

2 Percents, Decimals, and Fractions
Section 6.1 Percents, Decimals, and Fractions

3 Objective A Understand Percents.

4 Understanding Percent
Percent means per one hundred. The % symbol is used to denote percent. If 48 of 100 squares are shaded, % is shaded. Objective A

5 Example There are 100 parrots and 58 are female. What percent of the parrots are female? Objective A 5

6 Example 31 out of 100 instructors are in their forties. What percent of instructors are in their forties? Objective A 6

7 Write Percents as Decimals or Fractions.
Objective B Write Percents as Decimals or Fractions.

8 Writing Percents as Decimals
Writing a Percent as a Decimal Replace the percent symbol with its decimal equivalent, 0.01; then multiply. 43% = 43(0.01) = 0.43 Objective A 8

9 Examples Write the percent as a decimal. 49% 49% = 49(0.01) b. 3.8%
= 0.49 3.8(0.01) = 0.038 185(0.01) = 1.85 Objective A 0.69(0.01) = 9

10 Percents as Fractions Writing a Percent as a Fraction
Replace the percent symbol with its fraction equivalent, then multiply. Don’t forget to simplify the fraction if possible. Objective A

11 Example Write each percent as a fraction or a mixed number in simplest form. 60% b. 1.4% Objective A 11

12 Example Write each percent as a fraction or mixed number in simplest form. a. 150% b. c. 12% 2

13 Write Decimals or Fractions as Percents.
Objective C Write Decimals or Fractions as Percents.

14 Writing Decimals as Percents
Writing a Decimal as a Percent Multiply by 1 in the form of 100%. 0.27 = 0.27(100%) = 27% Objective A 14

15 Examples Write each decimal as a percent. 0.26 1.46 0.26(100%) = 26%
0.7 0.061 0.26(100%) = 26% 1.46(100%) = 146% 0.09(100%) = 9% Objective A 0.7(100%) = 70% 0.061(100%) = 6.1% 15

16 Fractions as Percents Writing a Fraction as a Percent
Multiplying by 1 in the form of 100% Objective A 16

17 Examples Write each fraction or a mixed number as a percent. a. b.
Objective A 17

18 Convert Percents, Decimals and Fractions.
Objective D Convert Percents, Decimals and Fractions.

19 Summary Objective A 19

20 Example 67% of American men are happy with their current weight. Convert this percent to a decimal. (Source: Gallup for Wheat Foods Council). Write this percent as a decimal and fraction. As a decimal: Objective A As a fraction: 20

21 Example An advertisement for a stereo system reads “1/5 off”. What percent off is this? Objective A Thus, “1/5 off” is the same as “20% off”. 21
