Kinds of Law Two major groups of Law: I. Criminal Law II. Civil Law

Criminal law: regulates public conduct and set out duties owed to society. Criminal Case: a legal action brought by the government against a person charged with a crime. Criminal laws have penalties, and offenders are Imprisoned, fined, supervision, or punished in some way.

Felony – A category of crimes that are often classified as the most serious types of offenses, and they can be either violent or non-violent. Misdemeanor – An offense that is a lesser crime punishable by a fine and/or county jail time for up to one year; misdemeanors are typically victimless crimes.

Civil Court : When you sue someone for damages, such as for assault or defamation, you are engaging in a civil court action. They determine whether the defendant is financially liable for the plaintiff's injuries. Criminal Court : Criminal courts try defendants for crimes against the state. Criminal convictions result in fines, incarceration (jail), public service, or other such sentences.

People of Michigan vs. Alexa Bernstein 4. ****Case must be proven beyond reasonable doubt** ^^^(by the government/people)

Civil Law: regulates relations between individuals or groups of individuals. (Legal name: Tort law) Civil Action (Lawsuit) can be brought by a person who feels wronged or injured by another person. Examples: Dog bites, faulty product, slip and fall

Important point to remember You can be charged in a Criminal and Civil case You can get off on a criminal charge However… You may lose in a civil case.. Why? Burden of proof is lower. (Ie. O.J. Simpson)
