Theatre
Most large towns had a theatre and by 1900 most of these were comfortable and some even luxurious. The average person who went to the theatre were middle class. Once there crowds would watch and listen various plays and operettas. At the time the works of Gilbert and Sullivan were very popular with the audiences.

Music Hall
Music halls had boomed in the Victorian times attracting crowds from the working class and audiences were much more lively and raucous than those visiting the theatre. The music hall hosted a variety of acts such as comedy, plays and songs. The crowd would laugh and sing along with their favourite artists some of whom could be very suggestive in their performances.

Churches/Chapels
Many people went to church at the start of twentieth century and although Sunday was the day of worship many more activities and events were put on for people during the week. Some of these activities were:
Choirs
Brass bands
Drama groups
Sports teams
For many people, especially women and children and in rural areas, these activities were there only form of regular entertainment.

8. Pubs Working Men’s Institute

Pubs
Pubs offered many, mainly men, the chance to socialise and drink. They also offered other entertainments such as darts, cards, bridge and quiz nights. They were even used by sports teams as their headquarters. However, this was all opposed by the Temperance movement who warned of the dangers of alcohol. This movement gained importance as wives worried about their husbands’ heavy drinking, chapel goers feared the decline in moral standards and industry bosses worried about absence from work.
Working Men’s Institute
A type of members only club that contained many things that pubs had but also included snooker rooms and concert halls.

After World War II few people owned records or record players. This was mainly because they were expensive and records themselves were easily broken.
People were much more likely to turn on the radio and in the late 1940s the music of big bands, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra dominated. People could also listen to music live and go down to a dance hall at the nearest Mecca. However, this was mainly for adults and not for young people.

However, in the 1950s young people began to buy records as they became cheaper and also listened to music on jukeboxes in some of the new coffee bars. These were new ideas and led to the creation of a new youth culture and the teenager was born.
The music they listened to came from America and was called rock’n’roll with artists such as Elvis Presley and Bill Haley. This was music that was very different to what their parents listened to and by the end of the 1950s there were at least 300 rock’n’roll groups in Liverpool alone.

The music in the 1960s at first was much like the decade before but it began and gradual change and became dominated by pop music. The Beatles were a sign of this. Originally a rock’n’roll group they developed pop music and the culture grew up alongside the success of the music. It was for these reasons that the decade became known as the ‘swinging sixties’.
This type of music didn’t impress all adults much but it did open the way for other types of music aimed at young people to flourish.
