SP 3.2: Using Means and MADs
Learning Target: I will determine whether samples differ more than what you would expect from natural variabilities. Homework: SP Investigation 3.2 p. 7 and CORRECT with the Zaption video Warm Up: Find the mean and the MAD of the following numbers: 21, 24, 25, 25, 25, 30 How much is 1 MAD in each direction? 2 MADs in each direction?

Warm Up: Find the mean and the MAD of the following numbers:
21, 24, 25, 25, 25, 30 Mean: = 150/ 6 = 25 MAD: = 10/ 6 = 1.6 How much is 1 MAD in each direction? 2 MADs? = 6.4 = 3.2

On the other hand, the means are quite different. (16 cm difference)
A. Write at least one sentence that compares the means of the two sets of data. B. Write at least one sentence that compares the variabilities of the two sets of data. The MADs of the two distributions are similar, so the variabilities are similar. On the other hand, the means are quite different. (16 cm difference)

C. Male BB players: 90.625% (29/32) are within two MADs of the mean.
Female BB players: 93.75% (30/32) are within two MADs of the mean.
8
D. 100% of the data fall within 3 MADs of the mean!
9
E. 1. The mean of the male heights is and it is greater than 2 MADs from the mean of the female heights.
10
2. Yes, the mean of the male professional basketball player distribution is an unexpected height for a female professional basketball player because the value is greater than 2 MADs from the mean for females.
11
F. 1. The mean of the female heights is and is close to 2 MADS less than the mean for male heights.
12
2. No, the mean of the female professional basketball player distribution is within the expected range of male professional basketball player heights, but at the very low end.

H. Looking at the mean, it is more likely a sample of male professional basketball players than a sample of female professional basketball players.
