This presentation was created to guide you through the basics on what you can do to encourage participation in Canadian Patient Safety Week (CPSW) to your members, staff and the public in the weeks before and including September 29 – October 4, 2008

3. Canadian Patient Safety Week
Canadian Patient Safety Week or CPSW is a national campaign to raise awareness of patient safety and related programs and initiatives being underway across the country.
Its objective is to raise national and regional interest in patient safety issues.
Its goal is to share information about optimal safety practices, highlight patient safety champions and recognize successful initiatives.
Founded in 2005, it is celebrated every fall.

4. Canadian Patient Safety Institute
The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) is an independent not-for-profit corporation with a mandate to advance patient safety in Canada, and funded by Health Canada.
CPSI provides leadership in building a foundation where patient safety can advance in Canada.
We work with partners in government and healthcare stakeholders like you to create new opportunities to develop, implement and recognize patient safety innovation within the Canadian health system.
We sponsor CPSW as part of our national mandate to build and advance a safer healthcare system for Canadians.

5. Theme: Knowledge is the best medicine
This year’s theme applies to many healthcare settings and builds on a fundamental and key element – knowledge sharing – between and among patients, clients, consumers and caregivers.
Its intent is to focus on the strong commitment Canadian healthcare providers have made to improving patient safety and the development of a culture of patient safety within their organizations.

6. Theme for CPSW 2008
It is meant to encourage patients, clients, consumers and all health care providers to become involved by speaking up and asking more questions, talking with each other, listening and understanding what is being said.

7. How you can participate…
CPSW would not be possible without the effort, dedication and input of volunteer leaders. They make CPSW come alive by initiating events and sharing information at work and directly to the public.
The role of Leader is to share information and plan events to get staff, patients and patients’ families interested, involved and informed.
We recognize that you are busy and have limited budgets. To make it easier to participate, we have created tools and loaded resources on the CPSW website for you to use.

9. CPSW Website - Ideas See our Idea Bank to get inspiration.
Learn what others have done during CPSW across the country. Ideas include:
provide Patient Safety talks at your facility;
host Patient Safety presentations for staff during grand rounds;
create patient safety displays in a high-traffic areas;
use CPSW buttons to encourage staff to be aware of CPSW between September 29 and October 4.

10. CPSW Activities
Involve your management in CPSW and share your organization’s plans for the week with staff.
Display posters in your facility to keep CPSW top of mind with colleagues.
Use articles on CPSW and the importance of knowledge sharing in health care in your organization’s newsletter, intranet or via .

11. Promotion and reward
Use CPSW products as prizes to recognize excellence.
Visit our Online Store – order printed posters, badge clips, mugs, notepads, calendars and more, to help promote Patient Safety now and all year long.
