2 Battery A battery is an electrochemical device, containing two or more power cells connected electrically, so that the chemical energy is converted into electricity.

3 Battery Batteries are useful. They allow us to transport electricity and use electronic items in locations where there are no electrical outlets, such as parks, beaches, etc.

4 Types of Batteries The primary battery converts chemical energy to electrical energy directly, using the chemical materials within the cell to start the action. The secondary battery must first be charged with electrical energy before it can convert chemical energy to electrical energy. The secondary battery is frequently called a storage battery, since it stores the energy that is supplied to it.

5 Battery Construction Negative Electrode (Anode)
Copper Positive Electrode (Cathode) Zinc Electrolyte (Acid)

6 Battery Construction Chemical oxidation occurs (lose electrons) Anode
Cathode + Electrolyte

7 Battery Construction Chemical reduction occurs (gain electrons) Anode
Cathode + Electrolyte

8 Battery Construction Anode: Cathode: Negative Terminal
Positive Terminal + Electrolyte

14 Batteries: The Lead-Acid Battery
The cathode is made of metallic lead, and the anode of lead dioxide. The electrolyte is sulfuric acid. This reaction is reversible (rechargeable). The lead sulfate product clings to the electrodes, so applied external voltage can reverse the reaction.

15 Batteries: The Lead-Acid Battery
Lead-acid batteries are referred to as “storage batteries”, because this charge-discharge cycle is so reliable. These batteries were used in every automobile until quite recently. The battery is discharged in order to start the engine. Once the engine is running and burning gasoline, it turns an alternator which recharges the battery This process can continue for up to 5 years of normal driving

17 Battery Life Battery Capacity (mAh) Battery Capacity (mAh)
Generally, battery life is calculated based on the current rating in milli Ampere per Hour and it is abbreviated as mAh. The battery life or capacity can be calculated from the input current rating of the battery and the load current of the circuit. Battery life will be high when the load current is less and vice versa. Generally, battery life is calculated based on the current rating in milli Ampere per Hour and it is abbreviated as mAh.
