HOT weather RISKS In order for your body to remain healthy your core body temperature must remain within very narrow limits as to not get too hot or too cold. Thermo-regulation = regulation of body temperature What are some different examples of things that may change your body temperature?

HOT weather RISKS Think back to some changes our body experiences when we exercise- how do we feel temperature wise after we exercise? When we exercise, our core body temperature increases (even more so when we exercise in the heat) Why?

Our body cools itself off during exercise: Perspiration (“Sweating”)= heat being transferred out of the body through body fluid being evaporated Blood redistributes itself to surface of body Causes skin to appear red and flushed

Dehydration Dehydration = loss of body fluids
Loss of body fluid is greater than the amount of fluids taken in during exercise. Drinking lots of fluids during exercise is best way to prevent Dehydration. What types of drinks are good to drink during exercise?

Stop ALL activity Remove yourself from sun and/or heat Drink lots of water, fluids Seek medical treatment if condition does not improve

Hot, Humid Weather Exercising in extreme heat or humid conditions can be very dangerous: Humidity = amount of water vapor in the air Exercising in extreme humidity can cause hyperthermia Hyperthermia = overheating, when your body temperature rises to high

Very common in Central Florida Avoid all and any exercise or sport related activities when storm is approaching: Open field activities Open water activities

How far away is lightning?
When you see a clear lightning strike you can count to get an approximate distance based on the following thunder. For every (approximate) 5 seconds you count between seeing strike until thunder sounds = about 1 mile Example: 15 seconds = about 3 miles away Avoid any outside activities when lightning is within 10 miles
