13. NSTA Standard 1: Effective teachers of science understand and articulate the knowledge and practices of contemporary science. They interrelate and interpret important concepts, ideas, and applications in their fields of licensure.
Synthesis of Indicators
Understand major theories, laws, principals, and interrelationships between them.
Familiar with state and national content standards.
Knows how to use science-specific technology
Understand central concepts of supporting disciplines.
Ways to Incorporate Standard into Instructional Planning
Chunk and scaffold content in a logical progression.
Include NGSS and RI Science GSEs into unit maps and lesson plans.
In unit maps, explicitly plan for integration of technology to create more “hands-on” inquiry activities in the classroom (example – use of video recording and analysis in Physics).
Include relevant CCSS math concepts in unit maps, and techniques for helping students understand math that might otherwise be a barrier to understanding science content (ex: how to teach logarithms when teaching pH scale).
