Math Seminar Session 4 Tuesday, February 4th, 2014
3
Agenda 1) Opening 5:00-5:10 2) Analyzing NCTM Standards 5:10-5:55
3) Unit Planning 5:55-6:15 4) Closing 6:15-6:25
4
GOALS Analyze the NCTM teaching standards and reflect on their connections to our daily lives as teachers. Integrate national process standards into unit-level and lesson-level instructional planning. Create professional growth goals based on the NCTM teaching standards.

Debrief Questions What connections can you make to what we’ve learned and discussed in past seminars? What resonates with you as a particularly poignant belief about teaching mathematics? Which of these beliefs do you see in action in your school? Which don’t you see in action in your school?
9
Standards Analysis Jigsaw
In this activity, you will be working in teams to pull apart specific NCTM teaching standards, which you will then bring back to the whole group.

Handout 4.2 Process Standards Pedagogy Standard Content Standards Standards 1 & 2: Seth, Brooke, Thom Standards 3, 4 & 5: Katie, Jeffrey Standards 6, 7 & 8: Jacob, Will, Wendy Standards, 9, 10, 13: Emily, Kathleen Standards 11, 14, 15: Maeve, Ellen

Standards Analysis Jigsaw
Identify the standard at the top of the page On the left-hand side of the chart paper, synthesize the indicators. On the right, brainstorm ways to incorporate the standard into your instructional planning. What details can I include in my unit maps and lesson plans to reinforce the importance of this teaching standard? How can I show excellence in this teaching standard during this unit?

Standard x: Synthesis of Indicators Ways to Incorporate Standard into Instructional Planning
13
NSTA Standard 1: Effective teachers of science understand and articulate the knowledge and practices of contemporary science. They interrelate and interpret important concepts, ideas, and applications in their fields of licensure. Synthesis of Indicators Understand major theories, laws, principals, and interrelationships between them. Familiar with state and national content standards. Knows how to use science-specific technology Understand central concepts of supporting disciplines. Ways to Incorporate Standard into Instructional Planning Chunk and scaffold content in a logical progression. Include NGSS and RI Science GSEs into unit maps and lesson plans. In unit maps, explicitly plan for integration of technology to create more “hands-on” inquiry activities in the classroom (example – use of video recording and analysis in Physics). Include relevant CCSS math concepts in unit maps, and techniques for helping students understand math that might otherwise be a barrier to understanding science content (ex: how to teach logarithms when teaching pH scale).

Presentations: As you listen to your colleagues present, you should take notes on the indicators for the different teaching standards, and the connections between each standard and your instructional planning. As you listen to your colleagues present each standard, you should also take rate yourself in each standard as either: Skillful Proficient Developing Focus Area
