The School Day

Play is Important! Aistear (0-6yrs.) The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework. Part of daily timetable. Children learn through play - fine and gross motor skills. Imagine, create, observe and imitate. New ideas Develop relationships, communication skills and oral language.

Learning to Read and Write
Jolly Phonics foundation for reading and writing. International research: the best multisensory method of teaching phonics. After one year’s teaching, children taught with Jolly Phonics have an average reading age around 12 months ahead of their actual age.

Practical Issues

First Few Days Help your child to a seat & leave.
Most children will settle down when parents have left. The first school term starts Thursday Sept. 1st. School finishes at 12 noon for the first 7 days and then 2:00pm from Mon. Sept. 12th. Collection at classroom door for the 1st week.

You can help! Label everything! My name Tags .ie
coats, hats, lunchboxes, drink bottles, pencil cases, folders, books etc. Schoolbags, lunchboxes can be easily opened and closed by child. Fruit cut up, straws out of plastic etc.

Skills Recognise their name. Hang up coat.
Put on and take off coats and sweatshirts (especially when they have been turned inside out!) - Zip/ button up coat. Put shoes on the correct feet…velcro shoes..no laces. Open and close schoolbags, lunchboxes, drinks. Pierce juice carton with straw. Toilet: Go independently, flush toilet, wash hands.

Skills Develop Fine Motor skills – lots of colouring
activities, cutting, pasting, beading etc. Encourage drawing skills – basic shapes, and then people, flowers, spiders etc. If using a pencil – triangular one is best and encourage correct pencil grip, tripod grip.

Therapy sessions Cover books in clear contact Label front cover of books/copybooks Use homework journal to communicate with teacher Progress folder Arrange an appointment for detailed discussion. Bring sample of book and copybook with label.

Information night for parents Detailed discussion of curriculum Aims/ objectives / expectations for the year. We will include more detail on individual aspects of the subjects within the curriculum at that point.
