1 CHE 107: Principles of Chemistry MTWF 12:30 – 1:20 pm Nobel Hall Room 201 Dr. Brandy Russell Office: 209 Nobel Hall

2 Principles of Chemistry
The five major subdivisions of the field of chemistry: Organic Inorganic Physical Analytical Biochemistry This course is a little bit of everything; a foundation for all future chemistry courses But what if I’m not a chemist?

3 Connections to Chemistry
Health and Medicine Sanitation systems Surgery with anesthesia Vaccines and antibiotics Energy and the Environment Fossil fuels Solar energy Nuclear energy Hydrogen-burning engines

4 Connections to Chemistry
Materials and Technology Polymers, ceramics, liquid crystals Room-temperature superconductors Molecular computing? Food and Agriculture Genetically modified crops Food additives Specialized fertilizers

5 The Scientific Method Observation Hypothesis Test

6 The scientific method is a systematic approach to research
A hypothesis is a tentative explanation for a set of observations tested modified A law is a concise statement of a relationship between phenomena that is always the same under the same conditions. A theory is a unifying principle that explains a body of facts and/or those laws that are based on them.

7 Scientists use controlled experiments to test hypotheses
