1 Representation What is it?

2 With a partner... 1. Write down a definition of REPRESENTATION 2. Reduce your definition to THREE most important words (this doesn’t have to make grammatical sense!) Description, Construction, Sterotype.

3 Representation is: Representation refers to the construction of aspects of reality such as people, places, objects, events, cultural identities and other abstract concepts. Essentially, how people, places etc are shown to an audience.

4 Your facebook profile is an online representation of yourself
You can use pictures, text, videos and links to create a representation of yourself to the public. Dave’s Facebook representation = teacher, academic, director, writer, sensible, trustworthy, opinionated, relaxed – total geek! To communicate this, I use pictures where I am smiling, night-out pictures/drunk pictures/famous landmark/geeky movie pictures, I have student friendly information on my profile – favourite TV shows, films, etc. The odd rage fuelled comment about remakes and/or Tory Scum.  Look at your friends Facebook page… what are they saying about themselves. Sum them up 

5 Aimee Lee-Brown REPRESENTATION: teenage girl, likes music, youtube and books, friendly, happy. Aimee is a teenage girl. She posts selfies of herself, showing her age. her favourite artist is Gavin Makhali, I know this as she posted a photo that the singer followed her on twitter. She likes reading books as her cover photo is her bookcase. She likes American Horror Story, as there is a photo of a poster on her page.

6 For example... What are all these characters and clips representing and how?

7 http://www. youtube. com/watch
– Will & Grace, gay person represented as camp, has good taste in home design. Shows he is camp when he kisses his mother and flicks his leg behind him in sync with his mom. He is also well dressed. The mother is represented as clueless, doesn’t know what’s going on, this is portrayed as she thinks that the reason why her son is so down is because she believes her sons two ‘ex girlfriends’ ‘fighting’ over him is the reason. – Old man defeating the sterotype by becoming a murderer / gangster person, did this by him going around shooting people and commiting crime. The youth were kind of in the stereotype as they were being criminals, and a lot of people see youth as criminals like this today, this is represented by them having knives, guns, trashing things, hoods up etc. Harry Brown is challenging the representation of elder people. - The Big Bang Theory, a geek, who likes playing with action figures, who is smart and clever, I can tell he is smart and clever because his voice is very nerdy, showing he is intelligent, it also may show he is a bit immature as he plays with his action figures. Represents the geeky fandom. – 24, very intense situation which Jack has to face terrifying missions, this shows Jack is brave and intelligent. He has to do things at very fast pace and has no time for breaks, showing that he is a very busy and courageous man.

8 Representing and Re-Presenting
You already know what a representation is Re-presenting is when the media takes an event and creates their own version of it to show you, the audience. For example:

9 The news: 1. EVENT – Gaddifi is killed
2. PRODUCTION (writing, filming, reporting) 3. RE-PRESENTATION – of the event to viewers The media doesn’t just give us a transparent ‘window on the world’, it gives us a mediated version of the world.

10 Activity with a partner:
Make a list of all the ‘mediations’ that happen in three examples of breaking news events that you have witnessed in your lives, and the audience watching the scenes on TV. Two to start you off: eg: EVENT: World cup match Commentators describe the action from their own point of view. Action replays are used to re-present key moments from various angles. 10 MINUTES!

11 One> Olympic Games Two> Commentator describes the action from their own point of view Three> Action Replay re-presents key moments of the situation from different angles 9/11> found out that the 9/11 has happened Next they have to find out about what has happened Then they have to actually go out and discover information, such as go and interview a witness/fire man/person who suffering in the incident. broadcast the information on the news on TV for people to see Scottish Independence> capturing all the debates as they happen, When found out about the vote, filmed the priminister where he announced the decision, Broadcasted it on tv to people to watch (live)

12 Methods of creating representations in TV drama
Visual - camera angles, shots, special effects, facial expressions, costume, setting Sound – theme songs, accents, tone of voice, narration Use of connotations - each of these sound/visual aspects of a TV drama has a connotation that helps to create a certain representation.

13 Connotations Act as visual short cuts for the audience
What are the connotations of this character’s costume? Where in the country/regions Would you imagine finding this Character based on their Appearance?

14 And these? Where in the country/regions
Would you imagine finding these people based on their appearances and why?

15 BUT... These representations are stereotypical What is a stereotype?
Why might TV producers use stereotypes in their programmes? How does it help the audience? With a partner, write down as many stereotypes as you can think of. 10 MINUTES!

16 Chavs: have their hoods up, hang around in gangs
English: like cups of tea White girl: likes starbucks and selfies Gangsters Mcdonalds workers women cant drive

17 Are stereotypes good or bad?
Using the internet, try and find three images that each demonstrate a particular stereotype and then discuss it with the person next to you. DISCUSS AS A CLASS Next, write down some descriptions and details of each stereotype listed DISCUSS AS A CLASS – are these images fair? Where have they come from? Does who YOU are affect how you interpret representations and stereotypes?

18 TASK 1: You as a Stereotype
Try and think about how other people see you? Do you/they think you are stereotypical in some way (based on your age, where you live, your hobbies/enjoyments) Ask your peers around the room for one word that describes you as a person. Keep a note of every word people use to describe you and type them ALL up on the following slide.

19 TASK 1 (continued) Using all the words you have gathered from your friends, use them to design a MOVIE POSTER of you and your life! A Movie poster that represents you! It can be as outrageous/silly/dramatic as you like, BUT you must have used all the descriptions you gathered to help make this poster so that it represents/reflects you the most it can!
