AIM: What is Global Warming?
Do Now: In your notes, discuss what you think you know about global warming.
2
Global warming is the term we use to describe what is happening to our planet…
The process taking place that is causing the temperature of our planet to rise is called the Greenhouse Effect.
3
I. Greenhouse Effect - causes the Earth to heat up by trapping insolation radiated from the sun and energy reradiated by the Earth. Insolation = incoming solar radiation (UV, infrared and visible light)
4
Short wave radiation (visible light and U
Short wave radiation (visible light and U.V) from the sun, passes through the atmosphere and is absorbed by Earth’s surface. the surface reradiates this energy as long wave radiation (infrared). long wave radiation is trapped by greenhouse gasses.
6
carbon dioxide is the best absorber of infrared energy
- three major greenhouse gasses are carbon-dioxide (CO2), methane and water vapor. carbon dioxide is the best absorber of infrared energy
7
Source of co2 and water vapor
As greenhouse gases increase, more energy is trapped and temperature increases. Source of co2 and water vapor Source of methane
8
II. Increases in Greenhouse Gasses (helps cause Global Warming)
A) The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, & gas) releases CO2 into the air.
9
The destruction of forests stops trees
from absorbing CO2 (during photosynthesis).
10
C) The burning of wood releases more CO2 into the air (forest fires, slash-burn farming).
11
D) Cattle, termites, garbage & rice fields
release large amounts of Methane into the air.
12
III. Effects of Global Warming: (affects from greenhouse gasses)
A) Shift in temp. and rainfall patterns.
13
B) Increased strength and number of
major storms due to temperature extremes.
14
Melting of polar ice caps and flooding of coastal areas.
