TAGUS RIVER BASIN AUTHORITY
DESIGN OF THE GROUNDWATER QUALITY MONITORING NETWORK IN COMPLIANCE WITH EUROPEAN DIRECTIVES TAGUS RIVER BASIN AUTHORITY (Spanish side)
2
OBJECTIVES REVISION AND ADAPTATION OF THE GROUNDWATER MONITORING NETWORK OF THE TAGUS SPANISH BASIN TO EUROPEAN DIRECTIVES AND EUROWATERNET’S REQUIREMENTS. SUPPLEMENT AND VALIDATE THE ANALYSIS OF PRESSURES AND IMPACTS (IMPRESS) IN GROUNDWATER. PROVIDE GENERAL INFORMATION ON GROUNDWATER STATUS. PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT TRENDS AND EVOLUTION OF WATER QUALITY IN GROUNDWATER BODIES AT RISK CONTROL OF PROTECTED AREAS
3
METHODOLOGY FOR NETWORK DESIGN
COMPILATION OF GEOLOGICAL, HYDROGEOLOGICAL, ANALYTICAL AND PRESSURES INFORMATION. NUMBER OF NECESSARY MONITORING POINTS FOR AN ADEQUATE MONITORING OF GROUNDWATER BODIES (CEDEX CRITERIA). SELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVE AREAS FOR THE LOCATION OF MONITORING POINTS. LOCATION OF INVENTORIED MONITORING POINTS (POINTS FROM PRE- EXISTING NETWORKS) INITIAL SELECTION OF MONITORING POINTS. FIELD INSPECTION OF PRE-SELECTED POINTS AND AREAS. DEFINITION OF DEFINITIVE GROUNDWATER MONITORING NETWORK. DESIGN OF SAMPLING CAMPAIGNS AND SELECTION OF INDICATIVE PARAMETERS.

Groundwater Bodies Identification and Characterisation: Report “Estudio inicial para la identificación y caracterización de las masas de agua subterránea de las Cuencas Intercomunitarias”, DGOHCA, 2003). 24 Groundwater bodies. AREA: Between 68 Km2 ( Jadraque) and Km2 ( Talavera). LITHOLOGY: Alluvial: Km2 Calcareous: Km2 Detritic: Km2 Paso de 13 UUHH a 24 masas de agua

Other sources of information:
River Basin Management Plan (CH Tajo) Report “Normas para el otorgamiento de autorizaciones de investigación o concesiones de agua subterránea para cada Unidad Hidrogeológica de la cuenca del Tajo”. CHT. Inventories of monitoring points from pre-existing groundwater monitoring networks (IGME, ROC Tajo, Comisaría de aguas CHT, …). Databases related to groundwater quality and groundwater levels (IGME, Comisaría de aguas CHT, CYII, …). CHT)”.. Other reports and complementary information (Preliminary identification of point and diffuse sources of priority substances, vulnerable zones, …).

Definition of Sub-networks
Definition of the number of monitoring points in groundwater monitoring network Methodology proposed in “Proyecto de Redes de Vigilancia: Criterios Generales” (CEDEX, 2003) the objective of which is to study the Groundwater Monitoring Network in compliance with requirements of Eurowaternet and EU Directives. Definition of Sub-networks Methodology proposed in “Criterios Técnicos para la Definición y Explotación de las Redes de Control Integradas de la Calidad de las Aguas Subterráneas en Cumplimiento de la DMA” (MIMAM, 2004).

DETERMINATION OF THE NUMBER OF MONITORING POINTS
“Proyecto de Redes de Vigilancia: Criterios Generales” (CEDEX, 2003). (Km2/Pto)
11
DETERMINATION OF THE NUMBER OF MONITORING POINTS
“Proyecto de Redes de Vigilancia: Criterios Generales” (CEDEX, 2003). Total number of monitoring points for the whole river basin district: 94 (minimum) – 106 (maximum). In Cáceres (Extremadura): between 8 (minimum) and 10 (maximum) Theoretical density of monitoring network: 1 point/301 km2 of GWB, with values between 109 km2/point and 403 km2/point (Between 338 km2/point and 403 km2/point in the GWB of Cáceres (Extremadura)) The maximum number of estimated points is 1 for 50% of the GWB (60% in the GWB of Cáceres (Extremadura)).
12
SELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVE AREAS
DEFINITION OF REPRESENTATIVE AREAS, DEPENDING ON: Characteristics of GWB (type of geological units, lithology, groundwater level …) Hydrogeological features (recharge and discharge areas, connections with other GWB, direction of groundwater flow, …) Potential and real pressures in the areas Water abstractions. Associated terrestrial ecosystems LOCATION OF MONITORING POINTS: DEFINITION OF ORDER OF PREFERENCE
