Nucleic Acids: Dna, RNA and ATP
2
DNA/rna DNA RNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid Ribonucleic Acid
Process that makes it: DNA replication Transcription Can it leave the nucleus? No Yes Function Codes genetic material/instructions Blueprint of DNA’s instructions – Takes messages to other parts of the cell Double or single stranded? Double Single Double helix? Where its made: Nucleus (Chromosomes) Nucleus Elements C H O N P DNA/rna
3
Nucleotide monomer Monomer: Nucleotide Elements C H O N and P
1. 5 carbon sugar (pentose sugar) DNA = Deoxyribose RNA = Ribose 2. Phosphate 3. Nitrogenous Base Adenine Guanine Cytosine Thymine (DNA only) Uracil (RNA only) Elements C H O N and P Polymer: Nucleic Acid (DNA,RNA or ATP)
4
Base pairs RNA base pairs DNA base pairs A=U C=G A=T
In RNA, uracil replace thymine! RNA has no T, DNA has no U. Nitrogenous Base
6
Dna structure The phosphate and the sugar line up to make the backbone of the DNA (phosphate sugar backbone) Hydrogen bonds link base pairs together DNA: A=T C=G RNA: A=U C=G
7
Pause - Think Fill out the table on the second page without looking at your notes! Use the information you remember from what we JUST talked about.
8
Pause - Talk Find a partner from another table, and compare and contrast what you wrote. Correct if anything is wrong. Between the two of you, is there something that needs more clarification by me?
9
Go back to your seat, and teach your partner.

ATP ATP = Adenine Tri-phosphate Used as cellular energy
Made in the Mitochondria takes glucose (sugar) to make ATP Made in the cytoplasm during glycolysis Similar shape to a nucleotide but it has 3 phosphates instead of one
