HOOVER One thing to remember about HOOVER is that he was the sitting president He did not believe the depression would get as bad as it did Almost had a sense of denial

VOLUNTEERISM Hoover believed that the government should NOT be responsible for aiding those hurting as a result of the GD He believed that charity organizations, churches, individuals would step in and help those in need Soup and bread lines

WHY NO GOVERNMENT? Small Govt!!!
Hoover thought too much government involvement in solving the problems of the Great Depression would actually HARM the country He thought it would make the government TOO BIG!!! He thought government programs would destroy a sense of respect

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS Hoover did try to stimulate the economy through a series of public works projects Hoover Dam

BONUS ARMY WWI Veterans were given bonus certificates to redeem at a later date after the war Once the depression hit, many tried to redeem these bonuses but they were denied The vets marched on Washington, DC setting up Hoovervilles outside of the White House Hoover called in the Army to force the “Bonus Army” from their locations

SMOOT-HAWLEY TARIFF Hoover pushed for Congress to pass this tariff
Remember, tariffs raises taxes on imports, making imported goods more expensive The goal was to stimulate the economy by encouraging buying American It did not work… the problems of the depression went too deep to fix this way

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT “FDR”
Things to remember about him… He was Teddy’s distant cousin He was in a wheelchair because he had polio as a child He was married to Eleanor who stepped outside the usual First Lady role and took on a more advisory position Democrat from New York Wins the election of 1932 mainly because he was not Hoover

IT’S THE GOVERNMENT’S JOB
He was for a BIG GOVERNMENT He believed it was the government’s job to help those in need and solve the problems of the Great Depression He gave hope to the people “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”

Brain Trust: A group of advisors to FDR selected to help him develop solutions to the depression Fireside Chats: FDR’s weekly radio addresses to the people for the sole purpose of giving hope and restoring confidence

First 100 Days- Relief After that… Recovery Alphabet Soup: nickname for it because of all the organizations created WPA, TVA, CCC, FDIC Also, fixed banks Created Social Security
