What do you think are some factors that determine how much structural damage occurs? 2) Liquefaction • when fine materials are saturated, and then vibrated, they act as a fluid.

3) Tsunamis the Japanese word for “harbor wave.” triggered by an earthquake or landslide, travels very fast across the ocean.

• Pacific seismic stations (buoys) relay data to Hawaii and other island nations. • this can give sufficient time to evacuate coastal areas.

Short-Range Predictions So far predictions have not been successful. b. Long-Range Forecasts A seismic gap refers to an area that is prone to earthquakes but has not had one in recent times.

III. Preparedness If you lived in an Earthquake prone area, what things would you do to prevent loss of life or damage to your home? If a tsunami warning were to be given for your area, what things could you do to prevent loss of life?
