1 Renewable Cities 2017 Delivering on Zero Emission Freight
Matthew Klippenstein GreenCarReports.com 2017 May 18

2 Why Zero Emission Freight?
Metro Vancouver GHG emissions by sector, Caring for the air, Page 4.

3 How Quick To Switch? Slow. Long-lasting. (20+ years)
Consumer goods, not commodities. In process. Very slow. Very long lasting. (50+ years) In process. How Quick To Switch? (Inter)national regulations more effective. Tech may not be ready. Metro Vancouver GHG emissions by sector, Caring for the air, Page 4.

4 Commodity good: if they save $$$, everyone switches quickly
Local travel (short haul / drayage) Zero Emission solutions ready / imminent Moderate turnover (~10 years) How Quick To Switch? ← honourable mention Metro Vancouver GHG emissions by sector, Caring for the air, Page 4.

5 What solutions are available?
Corvus Energy hybrid tug - zero emissions, part of the time. Moves freighters (cargo ships) around local ports. BYD T9 “Class 8” battery truck. Available now. Cheap to charge, but 92 mile range. Toyota Project Portal “Class 8” fuel cell truck prototype. 250 mile range; where to fuel? Corvus Energy - RT Evolution hybrid tugboat -

6 Herding Cats Stakeholders
OEM’s end user fleets public sector local community beneficial cargo owners Infrastructure (fuel / electricity)

7 Lessons from early work (Port of Los Angeles)
Pilot trials in 2017 are needed for uptake in 2022 Industry needs to see real-life reliability data before embracing new tech. Pilot trial’s biggest goal: de-risk the decision to switch. Lots of outreach and collaborative work necessary. Needs funding from regional / national governments (unless your city is rich). Technology-agnostic trials probably easier to move forward. Local communities generally supportive (reduces smog, particulates in their air).
