Teacher Certification
We created a proposal to attempt to alleviate the problem that many of us are having filling vacant positions with certified science teachers
Is there a need for a Science or STEM extension for elementary teachers?

17. Teacher Certification Proposal
Create a Preliminary Science Certification
Available to tenured teachers certified in at least one science discipline
Requires 8 semester hours of introductory coursework in the second science discipline
Requires passing the CST in the second discipline
Requires mentoring by a certified science teacher in the second science discipline
Expires after one year
Restructure Initial Certification for an Additional Science Discipline
Return to the 18 semester hour requirement
Broaden the types of courses that can be used toward certification to include courses that combine content and pedagogy, and application courses.

Create a STEM Extension
Similar to the General Science Extension
Require 8 credits in science, 8 credits in mathematics, and 8 credits in technology
This extension would provide teachers with a broader perspective as to how each of these content areas fits together and are needed to fully understand and develop solutions to problems.
Could provide a solution to the technology teacher shortage at the middle level
Reinstate BOCES Certification Officers at all BOCES locations
This would provide prospective teachers with a person they could speak to about the course requirements that lead to certification.
