Unity Psalm133
2
Unity The unity of God’s people is a key to releasing the blessings of God upon communities of His people Perhaps too often we concentrate on our own relationship with God We have been called into a family, a body, a church and we need to relate well together The Psalmist (David) knows the joy of unity and also the dangers of division
3
Unity “Behold” – look and see something important Good and pleasant
Brethren – Hebrew “‘ach” – used around 740 in the OT. Refers to natural blood brothers but also to neighbours and fellow craftsmen (see Isaiah 41:6,7) Dwell together – spending time, relying on one another, comfortable in each other’s presence
4
Unity “Unity” – not uniformity
A deliberate stance of laying down our own agendas for the common good Unity is strength/ stronger together Together we can achieve far more than we can on our own
5
Unity “Precious oil” – an oil of anointing
Used to signify the Holy Spirit A sign of God’s presence with the one anointed, one set apart for a task or role There is so much oil that it spreads down the face and beard of the one anointed, a plentiful supply The priestly robes touched by the oil
6
Unity “Dew of Hermon” – a gentle, refreshing supply for growth
Hermon is a mountain in northern Israel far from Zion in Jerusalem Zion is often a picture of God’s people The refreshment comes from afar The Lord has commanded His blessing on His unified people The blessing of “life forevermore”
7
Unity Our response Unity does not come easily, it needs to be worked at sometimes United for a purpose – to glorify God together United for a purpose – to bring more people into His wonderful family United for a purpose – to see God’s enemy defeated Do you want God’s blessing on you and our church – “dwell together in unity!”
