Wind Integration and DR PNDRP Dec. 5, 2008

2
What’s the Problem with Wind?
Wind requires increased “ancillary services” What are ancillary services? Spinning reserve Non-spinning reserve Regulation Load following Black start Voltage Control 2
3
What are “Regulation” and “Load Following?”

LF - Reg - 5
6
Regulation Needed every hour of year Quick, automatic response
Must go both ways (“reg up” and “reg down”) Wind doesn’t increase need for reg much 6
7
Load Following Scheduled w/in hour Reduces regulation requirements*
Must go up and down Needed every day if not every hour Wind increases requirements *If reg is cheap and abundant enough, LF not needed 7
8
So What Kind of DR Might Work?
Available nearly all the time Up and down Possibilities Water heating, w/ smart grid tech Pumping Some electrochemical processes Ice storage for HVAC ? 8
9
Conclusions Wind integration (i.e. ancillary services) offer a new way for DR to be useful Not all (maybe not much) DR will qualify Frequent dispatch Up and down 9
