Hebrews 8:6-13 (NKJV) 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a

Knowing God’s Word Hebrews
6
Knowing God’s Word Two weeks ago we took a look at the book of Philemon, a plea for him to receive Onesimus back again This week we move onto the book of Hebrews Hebrews is the 19th book in the NT and is the first of the General Epistles (Hebrews through Jude)
7
Knowing God’s Word The epistle of Hebrews itself does not indicate a clear author There have been many names tied to the writing, such as Paul, Luke, Barnabas, Apollos and others The most popular choice has been the apostle Paul
8
Knowing God’s Word Case for Paul as author:
Many early church fathers attribute the letter to Paul Many scholars attribute the letter to Paul The author refers to “our brother Timothy” (13:23) The author refers to “those from Italy” (13:24)
9
Knowing God’s Word Case for Paul as author:
The author asks for prayers to be “restored to you” (13:18-19) Some say that Paul could have had Luke pen the letter for him These are the reasons some connect Paul to the writing of this letter
10
Knowing God’s Word Case against Paul as author:
The letter is anonymous, which is unlike any other letter Paul wrote The author indicates he received the gospel second-hand (2:3); Paul received it from Jesus Christ Himself (Gal. 1:11-12) The style does not bear the style of Paul from his other epistles
11
Knowing God’s Word The letter is not addressed to any congregation or to any specific individuals Based on what is written, it seems to be addressed to Jewish Christians (not Gentile) We also can see that the writer seems to have known them personally (10:34; 13:19)
12
Knowing God’s Word The dating of this book would be prior to AD 70 since it makes no mention of the destruction of Jerusalem or the temple and speaks of priests still making sacrifices (8:4; 10:11) Also would have been prior to Jewish Wars (66-70 AD; Heb. 12:4) Date would be around AD
13
Knowing God’s Word Hebrews is written to keep Jewish Christians from going back into Judaism There would have been pressure on these Christians from Jews still following the Law of Moses Hebrews shows why Christ is better than the Old Law and the things that came before
14
Knowing God’s Word Christ & Christianity are better than: Angels (1:4)
Moses & Joshua (3 & 4) Priest (7) Old Covenant (7:22; 8:6) Animal Sacrifices (9 & 10)
15
Knowing God’s Word These Jewish Christians were in danger of losing their souls and their inheritance by going back into Judaism It mirrors those of old who would have lost their inheritance (Canaan) by going back to Egypt There are warnings listed for them as well
16
Knowing God’s Word They are warned… Against drifting (2:1-4)
Against departing (3:12-15) Against disobedience (4:11-13) Against dullness (5:11-6:6) Against despising (10:26-39) Against defying (12:25-29)
