2 The 5 most agreed upon characteristics of play
Play is self-chosen and self-directed Play is intrinsically motivated (means are more valued than ends) Play is guided by rules, but the rules leave room for creativity Play is imaginative Play is conducted in an active, alert state of mind and is free from stress. Page 2

4 Types of Play Nature Play: exploration of the landscapes we live in
Intergenerational Play: playing with adults such as teachers and parents Child Initiated Play: play that is freely chosen, personally directed, intrinsically motivating. In other words, play for plays sake Social Play: play that involves the interaction between two or more children Physical Play: activities that allow children to use physical movements and energy Creative Play: play that satisfies the need for self expression such as role play, art and design and construction A world without play: Literature review Gleave, J & Cole-Hamilton, I (January 2012) NCB for Play England

6 Nature Play Helps children deal with stress
Promotes sense of belonging and identity (Bird 2007) Effective way of reducing symptoms of ADHD (Panksepp 2008) Lower sickness rates and absences

7 Intergenerational Play
Promotes more complex and symbolic play and language Allows children to form deep emotional attachments More likely to perceive people different to them in a positive light When this type of play is physical it tends to promote a sense of competition without aggression or violence

8 Child Initiated Play Lack of this type of play can increase anxiety and reduce a sense of control Supports the ability to concentrate and follow through with a task Better able to judge potentially dangerous situations later in life Children involved in this type of play are actually creating deeper neurological connections in the brain

9 Social Play Reduces feelings of loneliness as teens
Limiting this type of play restricts the ability to build trusting relationships Can help prevent undesirable behaviour such as lying, fighting and temper tantrums Helps children maintain a sense of community

10 Physical Play Children less likely to smoke and abuse alcohol/drugs as teens Most likely type of play to continue into adulthood Children are naturally motivated by the social/emotional benfits of this type of play Leads to better overall health

11 Creative Play Helps children develop resilience, defined as confidence to confront challenges Boys engaged in this type of play have been shown to have lower levels of aggression Girls are more likely to exhibit leaderships abilities while engaged in this type of play Children learn about self control and restraint Develop the ability to interpret subtle social nuances

12 Play Based Learning Keep in mind
