1 Welcome to the 21st Century: Computer Science for All
Jenna Garcia District Manager Joe Kmoch CS Education Consultant October 27, 2015 Show of hands: how many have heard of Code.org? Hour of Code?

2 every student Our Mission: opportunity every school
Every school should teach, every student basic exposure reams of data –million jobs gap, opportunity grow economy silicon valley understands the real reason– it’s the RIGHT thing to do. We don’t look at job data when teach redblood cells, H2O, quadratic equation. In a 21st century surrounded, every child needs some basic awareness. opportunity

3 Through CS, students learn:
Mathematical and computational ideas Strategies for solving problems Effective ways to communicate How to collaborate with others

4 Through CS students are becoming:
Creators Innovators Persistent problem solvers Active participants in society CS is empowering. Students develop a sense of agency and ownership of their learning. Screenshot from App Inventor.

5 A Few More Considerations Related to CS

6 Debunking Computer Science Myths
Our kids should be learning to code. computer science Computer Science education is on the rise. recovery from a 10-year decline.

7 Fewer CS majors than 10 years ago (and a shrinking % are women)
The highest this ever was was in the 80s - still on a decline from then - and 40% were women. Sources: National Science Foundation

8 Women, african americans, hispanic americans are woefully excluded from this foundational field (and the opportunity to access the best paying jobs in the country)

11 Debunking Computer Science Myths
Computer science is about technology. logic, problem solving, and creativity Computer science is for boys. everybody Grace Hopper at Univac keyboard in This is the computer at which she coined the term “bug” in the program. For everybody…and always was. I don't really know why computers took over as toys for boys in our culture - but maybe because the thinking gets mixed up with the technology and machines

12 Debunking Computer Science Myths
Every The tech industry is desperately trying to hire computer programmers.

13 ----- Meeting Notes (4/1/15 10:09) -----
Let's think of an industry Dentistry, HVAC

14 The Picture in Wisconsin
Dennis has trained over 200 K-5 Teachers and has held host ??? HS workshops leading to ??? Teachers trained

15 Debunking Computer Science Myths
Computer Science is vocational. foundational AUDIENCE POP QUIZ What is photosynthesis? What is H2O? Solve: x2 – 9 = 0 What is a for loop? Why am I asking these questions? We don’t look at job data when teach redblood cells, H2O, quadratic equation. It’s foundational to everything around you. In a 21st century surrounded, every child needs some basic awareness.

16 Dispelling myths about STEM
(“Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math”) There is a surplus of jobs in STEM computer science

17 Computer Science: 2% of STEM students
Computer Science: 60% of STEM jobs Sources: College Board, Bureau of Labor Statistics, National Science Foundation

19 Code.org’s Curriculum

20 Multiple Entry Points Hour of Code K-12 programs K-5 programs
CS in Algebra, CS in Science High School Programs High level -- not too many details.

21 All sorts of CS concepts covered plus the 21st Century concepts of communication, collaboration, creativity, problem solving and persistence Through these courses (there are actually 4 now) students are exposed to and begin to internalize lots of typical CS concepts: sequences(1), loops(1), conditionals(2) They also get into Computational Thinking ideas such as algorithm(2)s and problem decomposition(3) and maybe even most important they are involved with certain dispositions including collaboration, perseverance, communication, creativity/innovation and critical thinking/problem solving (the 21st Century’s 4Cs)

22 K – 5 Curriculum Short courses for elementary school
Free / open-source Online “games” on any modern browser/tablet Video lectures by Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Bosh, Bill Gates Deeply aligned to Common Core Math + ELA, NGSS Free professional development workshops nationwide 99% approval by teachers Any district, school, or teacher can participate

23 K-5 Curriculum Structure
Two types of Activities Unplugged Plugged

24 Unplugged Activity: Loopy
Videos are all professional and high quality. They are of two types – one is more instructional (teacher facing) and background for the teacher; the other is primarily for students (student facing). The Loopy video I’d show only the last half with Miral’s professional dancers.

25 Plugged Activity: Angry Bird
Insert image of young woman and link to Also download the video Maze Intro so we have a backup if the internet is slow or non- existent Videos are all professional and high quality. This is a student facing video.

26 K-5 Workshops for Teachers
Active learning by the attendees Almost no lecturing (you won’t fall asleep) Uses the TLO (Teacher-Learner-Observer) model in all Code.org PD Is there a logo for Code.org CSP? Maybe put this on two slides?

27 K-5 Workshops for Teachers
In Milwaukee at Marquette University All Day 8:30am – 4:00pm on a Saturday Next one is December 12, 2015 Totally FREE Over the past year we’ve trained about 250 Is there a logo for Code.org CSP? Maybe put this on two slides?

28 How do I sign up for this FREE workshop?
Navigate to: In K-5 Teachers block click on Find a Workshop Is there a logo for Code.org CSP? Maybe put this on two slides?

29 K-5 Workshops for Teachers
We also do on-site workshops Entire staff of a school Teachers from various district schools Same all-day format or it can be adjusted Doesn’t have to be a Saturday We done 6 workshops in this manner Is there a logo for Code.org CSP? Maybe put this on two slides?

30 For Onsite K-5 Workshops for Teachers
Contact Dennis – Or you can me – We’ve done 6 workshops in this manner

31 High School Computer Science
