3 Dexter L. Lee, PhD dllee@Howard.edu
The American Physiological Society Dexter L. Lee, PhD Dexter L. Lee earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Jackson State University and Master of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Akron. Dexter earned is PhD from the Department of Physiology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dexter completed postdoctoral training in the Vascular Biology Center and the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Georgia. As a faculty member in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the Howard University College of Medicine, his laboratory focuses on the acquisition of hemodynamic data using mouse models of chronic hypertension to identify molecular markers and inflammatory cytokines that regulate blood pressure through renal-dependent mechanisms. Dexter serves as the department’s Director of Graduate Studies and as co-director of the Translational Biomedical Science program between Georgetown and Howard Universities. Dexter’s teaching responsibilities include teaching Renal Physiology to Allied Health Dental, Graduate, Medical, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Undergraduate students.

Computer assisted Learning: Flipped Classroom – students review the online lecture material before class and come to class to have an interactive discussion with the professor. All the information must be delivered to the students in advance. The students must review the material before coming to class. Mobile Devices: Personal digital assistants (PDAs) are routinely used by students for medical questions, patient management, and treatment decisions. Medical apps for iPhones and Android devices are numerous. Clickers are also often used to determine student participation and understanding during class. Reliable Wi-Fi vs Data Charges Contract with software companies

9 The American Physiological Society
Digital Games: This method provides medical students with a fun and structured experience that had an effect not only on their learning, but also on their understanding of the particular needs of patients. (i.e. ElderQuest) Class interactions are increased Clear objectives covered Simulation: The aim of simulation is to imitate real patients, anatomic regions, or clinical tasks, and/or mirror the real-life circumstances in which medical services are rendered. Simulations can fulfill a number of educational goals. Resources Personnel

Wearable Technologies: Google Glass is being tested as a new layer of technology that makes education more realistic and potentially more effective. Resources Medical education is rapidly changing, influenced by many factors including the changing healthcare environment, the changing role of the physician, altered societal expectations, rapidly changing medical science, and the diversity of pedagogical techniques. Similar changes in teaching/learning are occurring with Graduate Students and other professional students. The roles of the professor and health professions are changing as well

11 SUMMARY The American Physiological Society
Know your duties, responsibilities and goals for the entire year. Develop a plan to accomplish goals and complete duties and responsibilities. Use your time effectively. Completely understand the technology that you are proposing to use in the classroom. Make sure the objectives are covered in the use of technology Determine if sufficient resources and personnel are in place before using technology in the classroom.
