2
Okay… you better know this one.
2 or 3? Which is bigger: 3! Phew! You got it!
3
17! 17 or 12? Let’s try another one… Which is bigger:
Another good answer!
4
How do we figure this out?
I bet you can do this… 1 or 3 ? Which is bigger: How do we figure this out?
5
Well, let’s think about it like pizza!
1 4 of a pizza is ONE slice out of 4. Like this and 3 4 of a pizza is THREE slices out of 4. Like this
6
So which is BIGGER? 1 4 3 4 ? or
7
! 3 4 So which is BIGGER? Well this makes sense!
3 4 ! Well this makes sense! ¾ is bigger than ¼ because 3 pieces out of the 4-piece pizza is more than 1 piece out of the 4-piece pizza! Let’s try another one.
8
How do we figure this out?
I bet you can do this… 1 or 2 ? Which is bigger: How do we figure this out?
9
so it’s GOTTA be more than
WAIT A MINUTE. 2 2 Isn’t equal to a WHOLE? 1 2 so it’s GOTTA be more than …right?
10
Let’s prove it! 2 2 Well… compared to 1 2
11
2 2 We were right! 1 2 Larger
12
So which is BIGGER? 1 4 3 4 ? or
13
So which is BIGGER? 3 4 ! I could visualize that in my mind really well. ¾ is bigger than ¼ because 3 pieces out of the 4-piece pizza is more than 1 piece out of the 4-piece pizza! Let’s try another one.
14
NOW it’s going to get tough!
1 or 1 ? Which is bigger: This is WAY trickier! The denominators are different! YIKES!
15
Well, let’s think about it like pizza again!
1 8 of a pizza is ONE slice out of 8. Like this and 1 5 of a pizza is ONE slice out of 5. Like this
16
So which is BIGGER? 1 8 1 5 ? or
17
So which is BIGGER? 1 5 ! So this tells us that FRACTIONS are different than WHOLE NUMBERS. Because even though 8 is bigger than 5, 1/5 is bigger than 1/8. Let’s try a tricky one this time!
18
Think about it like pizza again!
Which is bigger? 2 or 2 ? Think about it like pizza again!
19
of a pizza is TWO slices out of 4. of a pizza is TWO slices out of 5.
Let’s see… 2 4 of a pizza is TWO slices out of 4. Like this and 2 5 of a pizza is TWO slices out of 5. Like this
20
So which is BIGGER? 2 4 2 5 ? or
21
So which is BIGGER? 2 4 ! So this tells us that FRACTIONS are different than WHOLE NUMBERS. Because even though 5 is bigger than 4, 2/4 is bigger than 2/5. Hmmm… let’s try one more.
