Aziz, Salwa binti Othman, Muhammad Aizat bin Azhari Akademi Pengajian Bahasa (APB) Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Introduction “Be Noticed, Stand Out” is an English course for those preparing for employment. It offers tips, guidelines and practices and the technical know-how of job applications and techniques for performing in any interview. The course guides learners on how to conduct job search, design resumes, produce video resumes and also provides specific interviewing techniques such as mirroring, body language and grooming. The exercises in the learning modules aim to hone and enhance interpersonal skills for screening and placement interviews and the language used in job applications context. The course also provides assessments for students to gauge their understanding, particularly on how to evaluate their own performance in an interview, scrutinize job advertisements, and match their own qualifications with the job requirements. Problem Statement Often times candidates found themselves to be less than ready for job interviews because they either have insufficient knowledge about the preparation and /or insufficient time to prepare. Furthermore, the resume is sometimes not well written and lacks finesse in the content and producing a well-written resume requires time and skills. The right amount of information needs to be included and users are spoilt for choice when sourcing for the most suitable samples to adopt and adapt. More importantly, the correct language use is a requirement because language forms the foundation of excellent job application documents. The big question that anyone applying for a job would have is “Do I have what it takes?” Thus, this course - “Be Noticed, Stand Out”- aims to equip students with the appropriate communication and interpersonal skills that are essential for professional growth. Objectives This course aims to: encourage the use of English language in job application documents. improve job applicants’ spoken skills. improve job applicants’ written skills. give job applicants opportunities to interact with module operators to make queries, clarify doubts and obtain feedback pertaining job applications via online interactions/forum This course is in line with UiTM’s aspirations and the national philosophy of education. Novelty Although there are many formal classroom courses as well as online materials available for mastering job applications, “Be Noticed, Stand Out”, as the title suggests, is one of its kind that offers learners with a simulated job search experience. Commercialization This product can become a useful teaching aid for language instructors to blend with their pre-planned lessons. It can also be the quick reference for job seekers and learners of English language.
