UBC Interprofessional Health Mentors Program

Teams of students learn from a mentor with a chronic condition or disability
Orientation (Monday, October 3rd) All mentors and students attend the orientation and receive more detailed information on the program along with time for each group to get to know each other 6 meetings (over 16 months, 2 hours 2-3 times a term) Topics include: Words and Meanings, Living with Chronic Disease/Disability, the Health Care Team, Patient-centred care Symposium (late April/early May) All participants gather to share and synthesize their learning through creative presentations

Participating programs: audiology, dentistry, genetic counseling,
medicine, kinesiology, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology; Students are volunteers who: receive academic credit as part of their program receive 65 immersion level points towards IPE (Interprofessional Education) passport; Students will be recruited by each participating program;

Students will…. Learn about the experience of chronic disease, and the range of work involved in its management from the perspective of the patient and family Explore their roles as individual practitioners and interprofessional teams in supporting people with chronic conditions, addressing psychosocial as well as biomedical needs. Hear first-hand from someone living with a chronic illness or disability Gain new insights and perspectives Share experiences and develop long-term relationships with students from other health disciplines
