Colony of New France France was made a royal colony in Champlain was called the “Father of New France”, but now as a royal colony, New France would be populated by French peasants, not French Fur Traders and Natives, and would become a colony for mercantilism, and use the Seigneurial system

Parts of the Sovereign Council
Represents the King, is responsible for: Defense of colony treaties with natives Governor Intendant Bishop Administrator, is responsible for: Local government (courts, roads, etc.) Economic development (business, trade) Settling the Colony (land disputes, ads, monitoring Siegnors Responsible for: Religion / church matters Service, schools, hospitals, weddings, funerals, charity Converting First Nations to Catholicism

First Intendant of New France
The first Intendant of New France was Jean Talon. He brought in soldiers to increase defense, industry such as lumber mills, tannery, and a brewery, and women called “Filles du Roi” to help populate the colony. The Filles du Roi came because they had no family / opportunity in France, and the term, in English, means “Daughters of the King”.

First Governor The first Governor was Frontenac. He extended the boundaries of the colony and increased the fur trade, and campaigned to both take Iroquois land, yet prevent war.

Group debate Who was the most important member of the government of New France? The Bishop, the Intendant, or the Governor? Each group will be assigned either the Bishop, Intendant or Governor and will argue that they are the most important. Use p. 48 – 49 of “Canada: Revisited Textbook” to help you.
