Business requirements
Common Business Requirements Should the revised well identification system be capable of uniquely identifying a Wellbore Segment as defined in WIAW? A Wellbore Segment is defined as a unique drilled interval within the Well. It can be the original Wellbore (from the surface to the terminating point) or it can be a deepening, kickoff or sidetrack, as measured from the downhole kickoff or sidetrack point to the bottomhole terminating point. Is further discussion required regarding the identification of Wellbore Completion? Well Identification 12/15/2010
7
Business requirements
US API Revision Requirements The revised well identification system: Must provide a well number with backwards compatibility to the existing API D12A well numbering standard. Must provide a well number that is absolutely unique and never reused or duplicated Must provide a well number that is permanent and does not change throughout time or life of the well regardless of change in ownership or change in well status. (specific exceptions such as duplication require best practices) Should not reserve well numbers for historical wells or proprietary wells Including extensions (e.g. 70 series)? Well Identification
8
Business requirements
The Well ID must support WIAW definitions: A deepening is a new wellbore (12 digit) A re-completion is not a new wellbore A workover is not a new wellbore There can be only one origin for a well Must be capable of uniquely identifying: Well origin All wellbores associated with the drilling All completions within a wellbore as defined within WIAW Must support relationships between well components Well Identification 12/15/2010
9
Business Requirements
The revised well identification system must include meta information: Who assigned the well identifier? When was the well identifier assigned? At what stage in the well lifecycle was the identifier assigned (planning, permitting, drilling, …) The revised well identifier can be assigned at any stage of the well lifecycle (best practice?) A well identifier assigned at the permit phase cannot be re-used if the well is re-permitted to a new location (best practice?) Well Identification 12/15/2010
10
Next steps Complete the US API revision requirements
Well ID Components: What are the components for Well ID (specifics)? What is the structure of the Well ID and the number? Well Identification
