Maternal Breeds White Large litters Heavy milkers
More fat and lighter muscled - GENERALLY

Landrace White with large down ears. Developed in Denmark, 1895.
Not common in stock shows in Texas. Extremely large litters. Excellent milk production. Least muscle and most fat of the white breeds. White OPB.

Chester White White with small down ears.
Originate in Chester County, PA, 1820. Intermediate in fat and muscle to the other white breeds. White OPB.

Yorkshire White with erect ears. Developed in England, early 1800’s.
“Universal Breed” Big framed, fast growing, heavy structured, large litters, heavy milking. Heavy muscled, lean. Has their own class.

Terminal Breeds Heavy muscled, lean, faster growing.
Poor mothers, smaller litters, don’t milk as well.

Berkshire Black with 6 white points, erect ears.
Developed in England, late 1700’s. Excellent carcass quality, but are lighter muscled and earlier maturing. Very heavy boned, feed efficient. Black OPB.

Poland China Black with 6 white points, down ears.
Developed in Ohio, 1800’s. Very fast growing, large litters, quiet, hardy. Light muscled, early maturing. Black OPB.

Spot Black and white spotted, down ears.
Developed in Indiana, late 1800’s out of Polands (originally called Spotted Poland China) Very hardy, fast- growing, feed efficient. Black OPB.

Duroc Red, down ears. Developed from Jersey Red (New Jersey) and Duroc (New York), mid- 1800’s. Extremely fast growing, excellent carcass quality. Big framed, heavy muscled and boned. Has their own class.

Hampshire Black with white belt, erect ears.
Developed in Hampshire County, England. First imported Heavy muscled, extra lean, stylish. Structural correctness and maternal ability are problems. Has their own class.

Pietrain Black and white spotted, erect ears. Developed in Belgium.
Medium framed, finer boned, less maternal. LEANEST, HEAVIEST MUSCLED. Introduced the “stress” gene to all modern hogs. Never shown.
