The soldiers I did not care so much for, but it was terrible to think of the women and children.” Captain Robert E. Lee Corps of Engineers

Many communities also existed in Mexican Texas until the revolution there. When the Irish sided with Catholic Mexico against Protestant pro-US elements. The Batallón de San Patricio, a battalion of US troops who deserted and fought alongside the Mexican Army against the United States in the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848, is also famous in Mexican history. Most were killed in the Battle of Churubusco; about 100 were captured by the U.S. and roughly ½ were hanged as deserters.

34 "America the Beautiful" written by Katharine Lee Bates.
Bates originally wrote the words as a poem (1893) 1913 version

35 O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

36 O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress A thoroughfare of freedom beat Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

37 O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness And every gain divine!

38 O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
